Dear Sushil,
I have really enjoyed reading your awsome book. The book itself is a road for excellency. You have done it in very Interesting way. Welldone
Dear Sushil,
I read the books "SUSHIL MANTRI BIG BETS BIG REWARDS UNUSUAL BUSINESS LESSONS FROM MY JOURNEY" it’s about Mr Sushil Mantri , I have read the biography of Warren Buffet, Steve Jobs, John d Rockefeller, and found this on similar lines except that this book was Short, to the point, few of the things (focus these people have) I found these things extremely fascinating
1.The importance to decision making in the organization at each level - I find this as one of the reasons for getting the best out of people- I know the importance of this since I myself work in an organization (hopefully I can bring this culture in my organization)
2. Seeing a calamity / recession as an opportunity ( especially the construction of mantri mall post getting know the legal issue at a later date / opening of mall during recession) this point is also in the art of the deal written
By Donald Trump's -recession presents you opportunity.
By Donald Trump's -resession presents you opportunity.
3. Starting out with nothing and building an empire in this competitive business is really fascinating
4. Bringing the local shops in Commercial Street to malls- building a global business based on local requirements. Eye for detail
5. Revenue sharing model - ensuring that guaranteed consideration is received during recession and profits are shared during good times – I am definitely sure great efforts would have been taken in this regard
6. Staying away from ipo knowing that - in this business Quarter on quarter you can't justify market expectations and share price could take a plunge
Thought I have visited Bangalore many times I never have visited
Mantri mall, maybe I need to add this to my to do list when I visit Bangalore in August (now that I know the entire story behind the construction of this mall).
To conclude Mr Mantri would have succeeded in any Field (this is demonstrated the way he ran his father's brokerage firm / the way he ran Ahamed Nagar industry / or even if he had gone for employment) - I really admire this person.
I have never invested in real estate company may be one day when Mantri developer becomes public I might invest due to the culture which Mr Mantri has groomed in your organization.
Dear Sushil,
I have met a fair bit of progress on your wonderful book on the flight back, your experiences navigating the past couple of decades as the Indian RE industry came of age are very insightful indeed.
Dear Sushil,
I have met a fair bit of progress on your wonderful book on the flight back, your experiences navigating the past couple of decades as the Indian RE industry came of age are very insightful indeed.
Dear Sushil,
Your book is quite inspirational and a must read for entrepreneurs!
Dear Mr. Mantri,
The book is a must read for those interested in business, entrepreneurship or real estate.
It chronicles the journey of an self-starter who has thrived in overcoming challenges and converting them to opportunities across multiple industries (stock-broking, manufacturing, real estate, education). It is an inspiration for anyone looking at standing out in business or for someone planning to take on any challenge. It has been written is very simple language and contains invaluable nuggets of knowledge across 3 generations of a successful Marwari family. The book even contains a chapter on advice from Mr Mantri's grandfather as well as the characteristics of Marwari families that make them successful in business.
I personally had the privilege of interviewing Mr Mantri on how he grew his business and the same can be viewed on YouTube to get a preview of the insights contained in the book.
Dear Sushilji,
I thank you very much for promptly sending me a copy of your Autobiography
“Big bets - Big rewards”.
I read the book fully, I must appreciate and congratulate your entrepreneurship, commitment and determination not only in starting Mantri Developers, but also in making this company in one of the successful real estate developers. There is so much to learn from your autobiography - the journey from scrap to being successful.
I am sure your company will continue to grow by leaps and bounds, under your leadership.
Dear Sushil,
I would like to say that your business philosophy is impressive and thought process very clear. I am sure that next time I am in Bangalore, I would surely make my way to Mantri Square to see the mall.
Dear Sushil ji,
It was great to spend time with you today. Very insightful indeed. Your business principles as reflected in the book (finished it, hence writing to congratulate you), were hitting the right chords, and I say, are close to Mapletree’s own principles. Thank you for signing the copy. Will cherish it.
Great Reading.
Dear Mr. Mantri,
Read the book, it gives a peek into Mantriji's mind. A completely contrarian thinker with an amazing solution oriented approach towards challenges. A lot to learn. Would be great to have regular chats with him and understand how he actually thinks (would want to learn how people develop the trait of Midas Touch). Is it possible to have a study tour at Mantri Developers and implement some best practices at JH :) including leadership & process.
Dear Mr. Mantri,
I finally got down to reading the book. I took it to London. You are indeed a success story and a role model for many a young entrepreneur. In fact my firm’s Annual Day is on this Sunday and the theme is ‘Entrepreneurship’.
Dear Mr. Mantri,
I am glad in writing to you to share my appreciation for your book Big Bets Big Rewards. It was presented to me a few weeks back by Ms Mantri, when I met her for a official meeting. I just read the whole book this week end and thought of writing few lines.
I must say that the book is very interesting read for its content on practical experiences and simple language. Any individual who is aspiring to be an entrepreneur will love this book. I personally liked it , may be for the reason that I strongly believe in many of your ideas on
Dear Sushil Mantri,
I have got signed copy of your book “Big Bets Big Rewards” during CREA-HYD meeting in June 2013. It is one of the best book I have come across related to Real Estate business. This has been my favourite gift to friends, family and business associates. This book is true inspiration.
Just finished reading your book. Thanks a lot for writing it. It truly gave an insight into your life and gave a very strong inspiration to keep doing what I am doing.
I must congratulate you for being so bold in writing about people in your life.
Congratulations! Extremely well articulated and a must read for any entrepreneur. Insightful and adventurous.
Dear Sushil ji,
I started reading your book today, I never finish any book in single reading, but this book was so inspiring and motivating that I completed reading in one day. There were many pages like your experience of handling Metro issue in Mantri Mall , you entering in to textile business at age of 16 as your father was not well, entering stock market business and applying 80:20 rule effectively and managing Foundry business which I read one more time as there is so much to learn from the same.
I always knew you as a successful person in real estate business but never knew what made you such a great person, today I realized the secret of this success and making of a great business leader.
I fully respect and believe in the paragraph on page #42 where you have mentioned “Children whose parents don’t impose their own decisions on them go on to achieve greater success in their lives because this independence brings a sense of responsibility”…….mine is also same case my parents gave me complete freedom to take all decisions of my life which course, which college, my marriage, my jobs…..so I was responsible for my every decision. I was a normal student who started his career at Rs. 700/ month in a small scale industry in Pune and since I moved to Bangalore in 1996 I have been Country Sales Head of National Semiconductor, AMD, Motorola and now PMC Sierra and given returns much more than expected to my employers in my sales career and now became Chairman of India Semiconductor Association where all previous Chairman’s were fm IIT or MS in US or PhD from US.
Thank you for sharing your success story it is truly inspirational and I have asked my both sons (22 and 19) to read this book. Your courage and risk taking ability is amazing and I have learned a lot today which will help me in my future plans.
Thank you for your wonderful gift, the book written by you and Mr. Benedict Paramanand, the Real Mantri Story which I read and enjoyed.
Reality primer for budding entrepreneurs
How important is the success saga of a realtor in today's India? Is his success a part of Bangalore's growth story? How did he manage to overcome two recession periods? Through his book Sushil Mantri-Big Bets, Big Rewards, Sushil Mantri, chairman and managing director of Mantri Developers, takes you to a world where perseverance coupled with luck transforms one's life. The book is a celebration of indomitable entrepreneurial spirit of a man who believes that destiny is a choice. With the country fast developing as 'urbanised concrete jungle' and more people migrating to cities, this book underlines the importance of an 'organised' realty sector. It serves as an inspiration to the young new generation of real estate entrepreneurs. His was not a regular rags-to-riches story or nerve-wracking tale of biographical contextualization, but a unique entrepreneurial journey with unusual business lessons. The book gives a sneak peek into his own career path and a glimpse into hardships, success, challenges, and hinges around his growth in business. It is an inspiring story of Mantri, a self-made business man, who started from scratch in 1999 in Bangalore and built a billion-dollar firm, braving customer cynicism, government hostility and financial ups and downs. It offers a vision and roadmap for reforms in real estate sector in the country. It released at the right time, as the Union Cabinet cleared the Real Estate (Regulation and Development)Bill aimed at cracking down unscrupulous realtors recently. A 'practical idealist', Mantri considers customers as 'uncrowned king'. His management philosophy of 'punctuality, quality, reliability, speed and transparency' is expected to inspire youngsters and budding businessmen. A handy reference for anyone who aims big in business, it deals with the practical difficulties in building a new brand which is a slow and tedious process. Though coming from a Pune-based business family, he struggled hard in Bangalore to build his business empire. Hardwork and dedication finally payed off; the completion of innovative Mantri Altius, high-end villa in the sky, changed the perception and became one of the landmarks of the city. There was no looking back then, many successful real-estate projects, attracted Morgan Stanley's 300 crore investment in the firm. Living in the recession period is hell, people say, but for Mantri it was an opportunity to start a business and appreciate the value of cash; this approach can be part of any new business curriculum as it speaks on the ways and methods to be adopted to overcome this 'harrowing period'. Take his words, "Our recession strategies may appear grossly aggressive. In fact, they can be termed as aggressive defence, the way some sports personalities like Rahul Dravid and Rafael Nadal play their game." The book may inspire many to start their own ventures. K V Kamath, chairman of ICICI Bank and Infosys Ltd, rightly puts it; "A primer for budding entrepreneurs and all those who seek to capitalise on the India growth story." This easy reading book is written jointly with journalist Benedict Paramanand.
I enjoyed reading the book. It is quite nostalgic to read the journey, I am an avid reader and have read thousands of books mostly about leaders, people, thought leaders, innovations etc. Yet, something which was a stark contrast which came out in your book is worth a mention. The candid admission of a person that "I am a workaholic" and "Marwari business man" talks volumes about the character this book displays. I have not seen such a clear thought process in any place. I read this book with my 15 year old son Jeevan. He hates books, and yet this time, he sat down with me for 3 chapters and he loved the chapter about the Mall. It is a book which can be read by a professional or a 15 year old; both have life lessons in it. "I wanted to study as to why malls in China failed" was a new way of thinking as it is. The book has got so many clear lessons to pick up. It has a skin of its own. I have seen many instances where there is an incident, bureaucracy, dilemma and yet a moral which comes out of the blue. It is extremely diplomatically written. I thank you for bringing this out. It is a combination of an autobiography, a self help book, a business thought leadership, a show case of real estate activity, and above all it comes out smooth as silk. I started the book and could not stop it, it just moved like a river. Thank you for bringing it out. Please consider bringing this book in other languages to emulate in regional languages.
I just completed reading your book and felt I hardly knew you. My heartiest congratulations for writing this book which has come straight from your heart. There are many things I got to know about you through this book.I am sure this book will be a great source of inspiration for many youngsters and budding entrepreneurs who have nothing but fire in belly and passion. I am very proud that I had the opportunity of working with you so closely and look forward to continue the same. You have many milestones yet to achieve.I take this opportunity to wish you all the best for all your future endeavors.
Congrats! Since I have already read the book ,I know people will appreciate it as you have provided real life perspective and examples.
It was pleasure to read your book "BIG BETS, BIG REWARDS". Your experience in words are very inspiring and I m sure it will be a catalyst to growth for any generation. I could sense the innovations in every lesson of your experience both technically and financially. Thanks for the wonderful book.
Very inspirational and reflects what I have seen of you. The lessons are what one gets from a typical Marwari family. The big difference is in your growth beyond the community. You have taken more risk than most marwaris, your principles are more stringent and you have focused a lot more on talent and respect. I love the PQRST principle. Your achievement within a decade of setting your foot in Bangalore is awe inspiring. Didn't know the key role Snehal has played in this growth. Simply awesome. Congratulations and best wishes. Cheers.
BIG BETS, BIG REWARDS, Unusual Business Lessons from My Journey, is an inspirational book not only for budding entrepreneurs but also for executives like me. It was an interesting and easy read and I have recommended the book to my friends circle. Being alone in the crowd and not following the crowd impressed me a lot. Your prescription to handle recession is a guide post for managing adversity. Emphasis on execution is the need of the hour for companies like Otis. Over the entire book provides nuggets of practical wisdom in the journey of excellence. Thank you again for inspiring us through your scintillating thoughts.
I am writing to thank you for the absolutely inspiring book written by you - something that every young entrepreneur should read. Your uncomplicated writing style, lucid explanation of business principles, the inspiring quotes and the sharing of your thoughts have made this book one of the best I have read. I heartily congratulate you and your bio-grapher, Mr Benedict Parmanand, on this auspicious occasion! It is said zero multiplied by any number results into zero. But a truly industrious person like you taught us now entirely new arithmetical computation ? zero multiplied by hard work, sincerity, focus, zeal, innovativeness, integrity, dedication, dynamism and entrepreneurship can turnout out into a billion dollars enterprise like Mantri Developers. I salute your success. I admire your achievements. I envy your entrepreneurship. Please keep it up. Great book all entrepreneurs to read and learn. Good one.
I very fondly remember to have expressed this wish to have a book on the stupendous success story of Sushil to be written. I am personally so happy that this has finally happened. The wish is fulfilled. I am sure the book will act as torch bearer for many to follow to be successful in life. Once again hearty congratulations!
I just completed reading your book. I thoroughly enjoyed it and related to many aspects that you have experienced. My father, who is my idol, had similar experiences and his innovative thinking during tough times pulled us through especially when we were doing the Reva project. I am fortunate to get to know you and Snehal better in the last one year. While I have always liked you as a person due to your simplicity, I never did know you as a entrepreneur or a businessman. This book gave me an excellent insight to the same. My best wishes to you for continued success in all fields that you endeavor.
The experiences and illustrations narrated are truly amazing and Quotes are to the point and if this book is read by ordinary entrepreneur his vision and ability surely take a U turn.
It is very informative and inspiring, as an ex-mantriite I could relate to the story better and enjoy reading.

I remember reading a quote by Sherman Alexie that says "When you read a piece of writing that you admire, send a note of thanks to the author." I read the book " SUSHIL MANTRI - Big Bets, Big Rewards. Unusual Business Lessons from My Journey " written by you with Benedict Paramanand. It was Awe-inspiring.
